F1 Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg victorious at home : Monaco

nico rosberg grand prix MonacoThis Sunday the German driver won the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, after a controlled start to finish race, the second win of his career.

In the wake of the Cannes Film Festival which will award its Palmes later on in the evening, another equally glamorous event shook the French Riviera.  It is of course the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, which annually attracts tourists and celebrities from around the world.  And this year, it was Nico Rosberg who won the bid in the Principality after a superbly controlled race at the wheel of his Mercedes.  Far from the multiple twists in the middle of the pack, it was the man who grew up in Le Rocher and whose father still resides there, that has fully taken advantage of acquiring the old and oh so important, in the perspective of winning, pole position.  Behind, an ambush from the two Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber did try to stop the dominance of the German but he emerged ahead, sure of his strength and his car.  Monaco still holds surprises for drivers, and this 71st race was no exception to the rule, demonstrated by the numerous spectacular crashes which have adorned the race.  First of all, it was the Ferrari of Felipe Massa which was left in the background at Sainte Devonte, forcing its occupant to immediately undergo tests at the Monaco hospital, but without major concerns.  Fifteen laps later, when Pastor Maldonado (Williams) smashed his car into a tobacconist, the race was stopped by a red flag, to allow time for race officials to remove the debris from the track.

This setback had no effect on the eventual winner Rosberg, whilst completely in control at the front of the pack and leaving his pursuers very few illusions.  Disappointment came from Fernando Alonso, who only came 7th, and from the Frenchman Romain Grosjean who lost control of his car at the end of the race and was forced to retire.  In the overall standings, it was Red Bull’s Vettel who carried out the performance of the weekend strengthening his leading position.
